A Thrift Store Score and A Sock
Here is a cool thrift store find...the push pins are actually spools, very cute...and there is room behind for storage of papers or something. Cost: $10 a bit pricey for thrift store but it is heavy and cute.
I finally started a sock and got somewhere with it! This yarn is called Lorna's Laces and is very yummy!! I'm not very happy with my casting on. Anyone have a favorite way of casting on for a nice finish?

Have you ever seen the book "Stitch and Bitch?" She has a great method that looks like a cat's cradle. Hope this helps.
I cast on the way I would increase stitches when knitting. By knitting the stitch and then taking it off the right needle and turning it around back onto the left needle.
I use a long-tail cast on because it's nice and stretch. You can see a video here

Hi there Cathi, that sure is yummy looking wool. I also use the long tail cast on. I find it's really neat and very stretchy which is great for socks. Definitely give it a go, once you have the hang of it, it's wonderful.

Oh, I think I have that colour of Lorna's Laces - I just adore her yarn. I tend to cast on with bigger needles. I haven't mastered the Italian cast-on or the provisional/long tail cast-on yet LOL. Love your little op-shop find too - very cute!
I love your sock...that yarn is beautiful...I can't knit a single stitch but I love them!
I haven't used Lorna's Laces but have heard wonderful thing about the yarn.
I don't think your cast on looks bad in the picture. Not sure how I do it . . I just do what I was taught to do many years ago.

A long-tail cast on is one I use, too--always makes a smooth, even edge and good elasticity. LOVE the color of your yarn. And your thrift find is wonderful--like the spool push-pins! Happy Knitting! :o)
Lovely sock start!!
That's a great find and a good value because its practical. Yarn is pretty too.
Cathi, I'm a new sock knitter too. I read pages and pages on the web looking for an easy sock and an oft-recommended cast-on. I eventually found a great pictorial of "twisted german cast-on" on webshots... it's by far the stretchiest cast-on I've ever used. BTW, that yarn looks fabulous.
