Slippers and the Start of Fabric Reorganization Drive!

Here are the slippers I made along with Barbara in our cyber craft along yesterday! I bought the fabric in Sweden, I love it!

Here is most of my fabric stash, most of it is scraps! But even I can have too many scraps! I can't bring myself to throw away any reproduction scraps, but I think I will be turning my big pile of unsorted scraps into a few pillows soon! I figure that I haven't made any crumb or string quilts ever, even though I hope to in the future, so keeping a small amount will be enough to get some done in the future, as we all know they reproduce in the dark anyway! I am sorting my fabric scraps by color, thinking I might do some color coordinated scrap quilts in the future. I thought about it for a while, contemplating sorting by size or by color, but I think color will work for me... What works best for you? Posted by Picasa

Love that red fabric! If my fabrics were on the same continent as me, I think I'd organize them by color. :)

smiled at your scrap pile... My scraps are sorted by size -- big enough to cut a few pieces from; big enough to paper piece with; only good for a postcard or the like.... Three tubs, no sorting I just pull out whatever comes to hand pretty much :-)

You are right, scraps do reproduce in the dark! I sort all my fabrics by colour. The only exception is holiday fabrics like Christmas or Halloween. They get sorted by theme. The tiniest of crumbs for my crumb quilts are just jumbled together though. I have only made one crumb quilt so far--I have enough crumbs in my studio to make many, many quilts!

I always sorts my scraps by colours. And some time ago I used to cut my scraps into squares in different sizes and stripes for log cabin. Suddenly I had enough for seveal quilts.

Okay, I've got to be different. *smile* I sort by value. I have 2 paintbuckets: one for lights & light-mediums of any color and the other for dark-mediums and darks. I use these for string quilts.

I just love your slippers, they are very cute indeed. Your stash looks very much like mine, not a lot of actual yardage, but lots of scraps!

I like your pillow idea the best. Then you can start anew! (How do we get ourselves into this?)

That's a lot of fabric! I don't have enough material to need to organise it, it all fits into one tub, so I can't help you in that regard.

Those slippers are FAB, Cathi! Is that the pattern from the new Tilda book? Your scrap mountain resonates with many of us--LOL! Isn't it good not to feel alone with an "addiction"?! I sort all my fabrics, scraps too, by color, trying to keep them organized in baskets or some container--emphasis on the word "trying"! Can't wait to see what you'll be making with all that! BTW, LOVE, LOVE your new look here! Happy Days! :o)

If you end up really getting into scrappy quilts in the future, you can always break into your pillows!

What a great picture of your scraps! You are right - you do have lots of them! They've been busy little beavers when you've not been looking!

What works best for me is a system similar to Bonnie's at www.quiltville.com. I have lots of plastic boxes with scraps cut in various sizes and shapes. I made the Broken Dishes quilt from several of the boxes last summer. Seems like cutting and sorting them is the only way they get used. I do have a tub labeled "strings" and another one labeled "crumbs" but the rest are squares, triangles, triangle squares and bricks.

Good luck dealing with those. I have a huge bin that will look just like that when I dump it out!
